Roy, Kourtney. The tourist. (Introduction by Del Barrett. Traduit de l’anglais par Brice Matthieussent). Marseille, André Frère Éditions (2020). 4°. [6] p. (folder) and 93 partly double-page-sized colour plates. Publisher’s imitation leather binding. First and only edition. – „The Tourist contains all the Roy hallmarks we love and expect: auto-portraiture, a filmic approach, her characteristic colour palette, as well as a tension ‚between the witty and the sinister, the conventional and the unorthodox, the glamour and the sleaze. … Having toured this world of ersatz glamour, we are sad to leave, but we should take with us a sense of relief that at least the daily routine in our world does not require self-grilling with aluminium foil“ (Del Barrett). – The Canadian photographer Kourtney Roy (born in 1981) „studied photography at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver and later at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. These formative years shaped her meticulous visual aesthetic, one that translates seamlessly across photography and film, from glossy print to moving images. Working independently across the art and advertising worlds, Roy brings a dark sense of humour to her practice, drawing on the grotesque undercurrents of seemingly placid settings and the tensions simmering just beneath the surface. Her photographs have received numerous awards and grants, including the Prix Picto (2007), the Emily Award, ECUAD (2012), the Prix Carte Blanche PMU / Le Bal (2013), Pernod Ricard’s prestigious Carte Blanche (2018), and the Prix Swiss Life à 4 mains (2024). She was also awarded grants from the French National Centre of the Arts in 2018 and the National Library of France photographic commission in 2022“ (kourtneyroy(dot)com). – Copy in mint condition.
