1 Arnold GmbH. 60 Jahre L. & C. Arnold GmbH (1871-1931). Katalog B 31. Grösste deutsche Stahlmöbel-Fabrik. Werke in Schorndorf-Stendal-Kempen/Rh.

– Sehr gutes Exemplar.
A rare sales catalogue from Germany’s oldest manufacturer of tubular steel furniture. – Featuring seating and tables, Fluhr coat racks, bedside tables and washstands, tubular steel and upholstered beds, and metal and tubular steel furniture for hospitals. – “In 1871, Louis Arnold and his son Carl founded the L.&C. Arnold iron furniture factory in Schorndorf, Baden-Württemberg, and in 1889 opened the factory in Stendal, which remains the only one still in operation today. By 1926, Arnold Werke had developed into one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of tubular steel furniture: 1,400 employees produced garden furniture, tubular steel beds, chairs, coat racks and tables, amongst other items. In the 1920s, the proximity to the Bauhaus in Dessau proved to be a stroke of luck. The Bauhaus members were keen to collaborate with industry. L.& C. Arnold in Stendal presented itself as a collaborative partner keen to experiment, and this led to visionary ideas, joint prototypes and successful competition entries. In 1927, L&C exhibited the first chair without rear legs – what we now call the cantilever chair – at the Werkbund exhibition in Stuttgart; it had been designed by Mart Stam and manufactured by L&C. In 1930, large-scale series production of chrome-plated tubular steel furniture for interiors began in Stendal. Designs by other Bauhaus artists were also brought to fruition: amongst other things, an exclusive range of over 36 Bauhaus-style models was produced for Marcel Breuer in 1933. The fitting out of the ‘Hindenburg’ airship with aluminium seating and tables in 1936 demonstrated L&C’s high standard of craftsmanship and brought the company international renown. Original pieces of furniture can still be viewed today at the Stendal factory and at the Zeppelin Museum in Friedrichshafen“ (lc-stendal(dot)de, L & C Stendal). – Enclosed: Supplementary sheets 2/1 and 3/1 “New Products Spring 1937” – Brochure 33 “Tubular steel bed frames for all types of accommodation” (Publisher’s No. 2. 1. 1. VII. 7.) with price list. – 2 original fabric samples “B 7” and “2510”. – Price list for upholstered items, July 1936, and price list for new products, Spring 1937. – Very good copy.
