Galán es considerado un precursor fundamental del neomexicanismo y del neoexpresionismo. Su carrera artística comenzó en 1980 gracias al apoyo del marchante de arte mexicano Guillermo Sepúlveda, en cuya galería realizó su primera exposición individual. En las décadas de 1980 y 1990 se codeó en Nueva York con artistas como Jean-Michel Basquiat y Francesco Clemente. Galán es considerado un precursor fundamental del neomexicanismo y del neoexpresionismo. Sus obras mezclaban símbolos tradicionales mexicanos (como el arte kitsch religioso, los retablos y los trajes típicos) con el surrealismo, la homoerótica y recuerdos íntimos de la infancia, a menudo extraños. The first and only monograph on the Mexican painter J. Galán (1958 or 1959–2006), one of the most dazzling and provocative figures in modern Mexican art history. Galán is regarded as a key pioneer of Neomexicanismo and Neo-Expressionism. His artistic career began in 1980 thanks to the support of the Mexican art dealer Guillermo Sepúlveda, in whose gallery he held his first solo exhibition. In the 1980s and 1990s, he moved in the circles of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente in New York. Galán is regarded as a key pioneer of Neomexicanismo and Neo-Expressionism. His works blended traditional Mexican symbols (such as religious kitsch art, retablos and traditional costumes) with Surrealism, homoeroticism and intimate, often bizarre childhood memories. Galán took part in groundbreaking exhibitions such as *Magiciens de la terre* at the Centre Pompidou (Paris, 1989) and *Latin American Artists of the Twentieth Century* at MoMA (New York, 1993).
