Weiß 101. – „Edizione sorvegliata da Bodoni e ben lo scorge chi ne esamina i pregi tipografici“ (Brooks). – Die hervorragende Leistung des Druckers Bodoni wird vom Herausgeber Joseph Teoli in seiner Widmung an Joseph Nicolaus Azara, dem kaiserlichen Legaten am päpstlichen Hofe, der die Publikation großzügig unterstützt hatte, explizit hervorgehoben: „Opus in lucem protrahere libentissime suscepisti. Neque id solum; sed etiam Typographum omnium praestantissimum elegisti, Johann. Baptistam Bodonium, ut nihil omnino quod ad Operis dignitatem splendoremque conferret, desideraretur“ (Bl. IV). – Prudentius (348- ca. 405), „aus Spanien (wahrscheinlich Tarragona), der größte christliche lateinische Dichter der Antike. Nach öffentlicher Wirksamkeit wandte er sich, wohl von Ambrosius angeregt, der Poesie zu. Seine (sämtlich erhaltenen) Werke sind: „Tageszeitenbuch“ (Cathemerinon liber), 10 Gedichte für die einzelnen Abschnitte des Tages, dazu 2 Festlieder (für Weihnachten und Epiphanias); „Über die Märtyrerkronen“ (Peristephanon), 14 Gedichte über Leiden und Tod einzelner Heiliger; „Apotheosis“, die katholische Lehre von der Dreifaltigkeit; „Ursprung der Sünde“ (Hamartigenia), gegen den Dualismus Markions, am Schluß die erste erhaltene poetisch bedeutende Schilderung von Hölle und Paradies: „Der Kampf um die Seele“ (Psychomachia), die Überwindung der heidnischen Laster durch die christlichen Tugenden, das in der Folgezeit wegen seiner Allegorien beliebteste Werk des P.; ferner ein Gedicht gegen Symmachus, den Verteidiger des alten Glaubens, und die „Doppelte Erquickung (oder: Speise)“ (Dittochaeon, vielleicht handschriftlich verdorben aus Ditropheum), Erläuterungen zu Bildern nach Szenen des Alten und Neuen Testaments in je 4 Hexametern. In P.’Dichtung verbinden sich harmonisch klassische Form und christlicher Geist“ (Tusculum Lexikon). – Deckel teils stärker berieben und etwas angestaubt, sehr schönes sauberes, breitrandiges und dekorativ gebundenes Exemplar.

Not only that; but you also chose the most outstanding of all typographers, Johann Baptist Bodoni, so that nothing at all might be lacking that would contribute to the dignity and splendour of the work” (fol. IV). – Prudentius (348–c. 405), “from Spain (probably Tarragona), the greatest Christian Latin poet of antiquity. After a career in public service, he turned to poetry, probably inspired by Ambrose. His works (all of which have survived) are: *Book of the Hours* (*Cathemerinon liber*), 10 poems for the different parts of the day, plus 2 festive hymns (for Christmas and Epiphany); ‘On the Martyrs’ Crowns’ (Peristephanon), 14 poems on the suffering and death of individual saints; ‘Apotheosis’, the Catholic doctrine of the Trinity; ‘The Origin of Sin’ (Hamartigenia), against Marcion’s dualism, concluding with the first surviving poetically significant depiction of Hell and Paradise: ‘The Battle for the Soul’ (Psychomachia), the triumph of Christian virtues over pagan vices, which subsequently became P.’s most popular work due to its allegories; furthermore, a poem against Symmachus, the defender of the old faith, and the ‘Double Refreshment (or: Food)’ (Dittochaeon, possibly a manuscript corruption of Ditropheum), commentaries on illustrations depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, each in four hexameters. ‘In P.’s poetry, classical form and the Christian spirit are harmoniously combined’ (Tusculum Lexicon). – Cover partly rather worn and slightly dusty; a very fine, clean copy with wide margins and a decorative binding.
