Grant’s Tomb. – „The Albertype Company was founded by Adolph Wittemann and Herman L. Wittemann in the late 1880s as a postcard and „view book“ publishing company. Prior to the founding of the Albertype Company there was a predecessor company, Wittemann Bros., which was founded in 1879. The Albertype Company most likely was formed in 1887 based on when copyrights with the company name first appeared in their works. The Albertype Company’s founding is usually stated to be in 1890, but this is inaccurate. The company survived until 1952, when it was purchased by the Art View postcard company, although they did not take over the company’s factory in Brooklyn. Sometimes Wittemann Bros. is referred to as „A. Wittemann,“ or „Adolph Wittemann,“ on the copyright page of the books, this is usually to indicate that Adolph Wittemann served as the photographer of the images in the book. The company described themselves as „Publisher of American Views,“ although they also produced tens of thousands of early postcards. Adolph Wittemann was born in Baden, Germany, in 1846 and emigrated to New York at the age of 24 in 1870. Jacob and Rudolph were the other brothers affiliated with the Wittemann Brothers company. When Jacob and Rudolph started to sell manufactured brewing equipment, the Albertype Company was formed. Jacob and Rudolph continued to do business using the Wittemann Brothers name, operating out of 188 William Street in Lower Manhattan, while Adolph and Herman operated their new business under the Albertype Company name“ (collectableivy(dot)com). Gochmann in Deutsch und Englisch. – „Fred Herzog (*1930 in Bad Friedrichshall) widmete sich nach seiner Emigration nach Kanada in den 1950er-Jahren einem damals eher unüblichen Medium: der Farbfotografie. Er durchbrach damit die etablierten Sehgewohnheiten und Lehrmeinungen, die vorrangig der Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie den Kunststatus zusprachen. Als Pionier der Farbfotografie perfektioniert er den Blick für das vermeintlich Nebensächliche. Seine Motive sind die Straßen von Vancouver, Supermärkte, Tankstellen, Bars, Stadtszenen, Landschaften und immer wieder die Menschen seiner Umgebung – die Höhen und Tiefen des nordamerikanischen Traums. Er lotet das Potenzial der Farbfotografie als Medium großer Objektivität wie auch großer Kunstfertigkeit aus und zeigt mit kritischem Blick Banales, Ephemeres und scheinbar Bedeutungsloses. Heiting/Jaeger II, 612 f. – Erste Ausgabe. – „Farbige Diapositive nach Farbauszugsnegativen und zugleich originalgetreue Vorlagen für die Reproduktion im Druck lieferte das Verfahren der Uvachromie, das nach ihrem Erfinder Arthur Traube (lat. ‚uva‘) benannt ist. Traube (1878-1948) war zunächst Mitarbeiter von Adolf Miethe in Berlin gewesen, bevor er 1904 als Chemiker zu der Plattenfabrik Otto Perutz nach München kam. Dort verbesserte er die Reproduktion von Farbauszugsaufnahmen im Druck und entwickelte daraus 1916 die Uvachromie. 1917 machte sich Traube mit der Uvachrom Gesellschaft für Farbenphotographie m.b.H., München, selbständig, 1919 vereinigte er sie mit der Farbenphotographischen Gesellschaft m.b.H., Stuttgart, von Hans Hildenbrand. 1922 veränderte sich die Firmierung in Uvachrom Akt.-Ges. für Farbenphotographie. … (Der Münchner Fotograf Ludwig Preiss war Geschäftsführer der Uvachrom A.G.). Uvachromien von Preiss finden sich auch in dem Bildband Palästina und das Ostjordanland (Stuttgart: Verlag Julius Hoffmann, 1925). Später gelangten Aufnahmen von ihm in das Erbauungsbuch 64 Bilder aus dem Heiligen Lande (Stuttgart: Privileg. Württembergische Bibelanstalt, 1932)“ (R. Heiting/Lemke 309 u. 314 u. S. 210 ff. – Erste englische Ausgabe, erschien gleichzeitig auch bei Grayson Publishing Corp. in New York und Fountain Press in London. Außerdem erschienen noch eine finnische und bereits 1945 eine schwedische Ausgabe. Die erste Ausgabe erschien 1952 bei Breidenstein in Frankfurt am Main. – „Among the photographic cognoscente, Meine Erfahrungen farbig (My experiences in colour photography), 1942 caused a real stir. In a total of 54 images, Wolff presented the world of color using the Leica camera. The book was printed by the Carl Werner company, with Hans Breidenstein handling the concept and distribution. In terms of structure, it is almost identical to the preceding guides and featured full-page images. Each image stands on its own, but aesthetically they complement one another. What is new are the themes that Wolff included to „freshen things up“ Alongside the increased number of advertising and industrial images, there are countless travel portraits from various countries, such as Morocco, Italy, Madeira and Yugoslavia. Moreover, he wanted to integrate pictures of soldiers taken on the Front – as can be gleaned from the relevant correspondence with Willi Klar: „My new color book is in process, but some images […] are still needed. Something from a soldier’s life should also be included. Night-time exercises with searchlights, etc.” Wolff requested, and also wrote in a later letter that he needed a greater range to choose from: „The handsome head of a soldier as a portrait, or something from a march or exercise. You’ll find out what’s good I’m sure.” Wolff was under immense time pressure with the publication: „We hope to be able to bring out an initial edition for Christmas. I do hope it will be a really great hit! ″ There were pragmatic reasons for including contemporary theme as this met the government guidelines“ (M.
