Tout est dans le visuel, dans la construction architecturale d’une double page, qui dans un même espace rassemble texte et reproductions de cartes, photographies d’objets, de personnes faisant la queue au bureau de poste, de personnages en carton – qui ne sont pas sans rappeler ceux que Varvara Stepanova réalise pour Rodtchenko –, de photomontages… Le tout accompagné de multiples couleurs, d’une typographie variée et variable dans sa taille et perturbée par l’irruption de mots manuscrits! L’humour ne manque pas, avec ce monstre enfermé dans un paquet, pas plus que l’irrationnel, avec ces paysages imaginaires parcourus par un postier qui semble emporté par la vitesse. Aux commandes de cet ouvrage, Piet Zwart, architecte, typographe, designer hollandais, proche du mouvement De Stijl et de la revue du même nom, en contact avec Lissitzky, Rodchenko, Doesburg, Schwitters et les membres du Bauhaus. First edition of the fascinating illustrated book by the renowned Dutch architect, typographer, designer and photographer Piet Zwart (1885–1977). – „Reading a manual on how the Dutch postal, telecommunications and telegraph services work is certainly not very appealing to a child, unless the author turns it into a visual spectacle, as in this *Het Boek van PTT*, published in 1938. It’s all about the visuals, the architectural layout of a double-page spread, which brings together within the same space text and reproductions of maps, photographs of objects, people queuing at the post office, cardboard cut-outs – reminiscent of those created by Varvara Stepanova for Rodchenko – and photomontages… All accompanied by a riot of colours, varied typography of fluctuating sizes, and disrupted by the sudden appearance of handwritten words! There is no shortage of humour, with this monster enclosed in a parcel, nor of the irrational, with these imaginary landscapes traversed by a postman who seems carried away by speed. At the helm of this work is Piet Zwart, a Dutch architect, typographer and designer, closely associated with the De Stijl movement and the magazine of the same name, and in contact with Lissitzky, Rodchenko, Doesburg, Schwitters and the members of the Bauhaus.
