Das dadurch ausgelöste Empfinden, das man uns die Vorstellung von diesen Unlustgefühlen vermittelt, ohne daß wir uns selbst in der gedachten Situation befinden, ist das Gefühl des Erhabenen. Aus dem Geselligkeitstrieb entspringen lustvolle Handlungen der Sympathie und des Wohlwollens, die uns positiv Freude bereiten und das Gefühl des Schönen auslösen“ (W. He assigns the sublime to the instinct of self-preservation and the beautiful to the instinct of sociability; actions that are dangerous and can cause pain arise from the pursuit of self-preservation. The feeling triggered by this, which gives us the idea of these feelings of unpleasantness without us being in the imagined situation ourselves, is the feeling of the sublime. Pleasurable acts of sympathy and benevolence arise from the sociability instinct, which give us positive pleasure and trigger the feeling of beauty” (W.
