Mary Ann Evans; London, Smith, Elder & Co. 1863 f.). Die Fotos meist mit Darstellungen antiker Skulpturen aus den Vatikanischen Museen und Ansichten aus Rom. – Marie Louise de la Ramée (1839-1908) lebte seit 1871 in Italien. – „Ouida’s eleventh, 1877 novel, Ariadne, contains some of the author’s finest writing. Written during a period when Ouida had been rising in her popularity and readership, it is a work that is richly decorated with historical and mythological references and classical literary allusions that would be lost on many readers of the present age. It has gorgeously poetic descriptions of dreamscapes and sculpture gardens, and it offers lavish imagery of the beauty of 19th century Rome. A very rare second edition; the first edition was published in 1877 (by Chapman & Hall and Chatto & Windus). – This edition is illustrated with 50 original photographs and has the same binding as the novel *Romola* by George Eliot (i.e. Mary Ann Evans; London, Smith, Elder & Co., 1863 ff.). The photographs mostly depict ancient sculptures from the Vatican Museums and views of Rome. – Marie Louise de la Ramée (1839–1908) lived in Italy from 1871 onwards. – Somewhat stained in places, very good copy.
