As Sir Walter Scott died in September 1832, the final volumes published in 1833 became his direct literary legacy. The series was a colossal commercial triumph. By setting the price at just five shillings per volume, Cadell made the previously unaffordable novels accessible to a broad middle class for the first time and helped Scott to pay off his enormous debts. – “It was not least the language of Scott’s novels, with its alternation between direct, indirect and reported speech, between dialect, Latinised and formulaic prose, self-parodying diction and lyrical interludes, that fascinated readers abroad.
