Print Run: 3,500 copies. – Set of portraits of Hockney’s friends, drawn by the artist during two visits to Gemini GEL in Los Angeles, from February to May 1976 and in November 1976. Includes portraits of famous friends, such as Billy Wilder, Henry Geldzahler, Nicholas Wilder, Michael Crichton, Christopher Isherwood, Don Bachardy, Brooke Hayward Hopper, and a self-portrait of Hockney. The 18 portraits from the ‘Friends’ lithography-portfolio were drawn by Hockney directly onto stone. This project laid the foundations for Hockney’s lifelong engagement with large-scale portrait series. The intimacy and the principle of systematically drawing his closest circle of friends are reflected, decades later, in famous exhibitions such as *82 Portraits and 1 Still-life* (on display at LACMA, amongst other venues). – Dust jacket with small tears at the edges; a good copy.
