Chessex, Eldorado gibt`s nicht mehr

Chessex, Eldorado gibt`s nicht mehr

Chessex, Luc. Eldorado gibt`s nicht mehr. 157 Fotografien aus Lateinamerika. – Quand il n`y a plus d`Eldorado. 157 photographies d`Amérique latine. (Übersetzung aus dem Französischen Urs Keltz). Zürich, Hans-Rudolf Lutz (1982). 4° (31 x 21,5 cm.). [6] S., 157 Duotone-Tafeln, davon 2 Portfolios mit 36 losen Duotone-Tafeln (18 zu Che Guevara und 18 zu Coca Cola). Orig.-Leinenband mit gelbem Schutzumschlag.

Auer 646. Fernández, The Latin American Photobook 247. Parr/Badger III, 113 ff. – Erste Ausgabe; erschien parallel auch bei Hubschmid & Bouret in Paris. H.-R. Lutz veröffentlichte bereits 1969 „Le Visage de la Revoltion“. – „Luc Chessex is a superb Swiss photojournalist, very much in the ‚concerned photographer‘ mould, who supported the Cuban Revolution in the most practical way possible – by joining it. In 1961, he based himself in Cuba, working for the Ministry of Education as the first official photographer of the revolution and then for the news agency Prensa Latina, travelling around Latin America to make pictures. But in 1975, without explanation or warning, Chessex was declared ‚persona non grata‘ by the Cuban authorities and put on a plane back to Switzerland. … The notion of populist politics being embedded in posters and slogans is also a strong feature of Chessex’s 1982 monograph, Quand il n’y a plus d’Eldorado. A retrospective trip through Chessex’s work in Latin America and other ‚Third World‘ countries, the main book has a striking supplement in the shape of two portfolios of loose images. One is devoted to street images featuring Che, the other to those featuring Coca-Cola. The struggle between socialism and capitalism is symbolized in two images a beard and a bottle although it is ironic that Che became a ‚pop‘ icon, infiltrating the bedsits of capitalist Western students, while Coca-Cola is an irresistible subversive force for US ‚imperialism‘, even in socialist countries“ (Martin Parr). – Sehr gutes Exemplar.
First edition; also published simultaneously by Hubschmid & Bouret in Paris. H.-R. Lutz had already published *Le Visage de la Révolution* in 1969. – Very fine copy.
