First edition of the important biography of Mishima Yukio (1975–1970), arguably the most representative and influential writer of post-war Japanese literature. – The eminent literary critic Shoichi Saeki (1922–2016) followed Mishima’s career at close quarters for a time. His biography, published in 1978, is regarded in Japan as the definitive work, as it offers a profound and analytical insight into Mishima’s literary genius and complex psyche, looking beyond the political scandals. – Mishima, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature on several occasions (1963, 1964, 1965, 1967 and 1968), wrote novels, screenplays, plays, short stories, poems and a libretto. In the 1960s, Mishima appeared in a series of sensational samurai and yakuza films. In 1960, he played the lead role in Yasuzo Masumura’s gangster film *Afraid to Die*. He also appeared in the films *Patriotism* (1966), *Black Lizard* (1968, directed by Kinji Fukasaku) and *Hitokiri* (1969, directed by Hideo Gosha). He wrote and sang the theme song for *Afraid to Die* himself. Moshima also posed for photo books featuring homoerotic semi-nude images of himself. Among other things, he modelled for the book *Bara-kei* by the photographer Eiko Hosoe and the book series *Young Samurai: Bodybuilders of Japan* by the photographer Tamotsu Yato, who is best known for his homoerotic black-and-white photographs. The American film critic Donald Richie witnessed the creation of one of Mishima’s most famous portraits: he posed in the snow, clad in a loincloth and holding a sword. His avant-garde works are characterised by a wide-ranging vocabulary, multi-layered metaphors, the fusion of traditional Japanese and modern Western literature, and his obsession with the unity of beauty, eroticism and death. In honour of his life’s work, the Mishima Prize was established in 1988 and has been awarded annually ever since. – A very fine copy.
