Albert – Lewes, Female characters of Goethe

Albert - Lewes, Female characters of Goethe

Albert – Lewes, G. H. Female characters of Goethe. From the original drawings of William Kaulbach. With explanatory text. Berlin, Wien, Paris, London, New York, Frederick Bruckmann o. J. (1867). 8° (18 x 14 cm.). [48] Bl. und 22 mont. Orig.-Photographien (Albuminabzüge, 7,5 x 6 cm.) von Joseph Albert nach Zeichnungen von W. Kaulbach. Schwarzgepr. Orig.-Lederband mit goldgepr. Rücken- und Deckeltitel (″Goethe Gallery“), Innenkantenvergoldung und Goldschnitt.

Vgl. Heidtmann, Wie das Photo ins Buch kam 819 ff. – Erste englische Ausgabe. – Titelblatt etwas braunfleckig, sonst sehr gut erhalten.
First English edition. The original German edition was published in various formats from 1860 onwards under the title “Goethe-Gallerie. Part 1: Goethe’s Female Characters”. – “The most successful of all publications featuring photographs” (F. Heidtmann). – “Friedrich Bruckmann (1814–1898) had an artistic bent, spent a considerable time in Paris, established a porcelain factory in Germany and, in 1858, founded the ‘Verlag für Kunst und Wissenschaft’ in Frankfurt, which became the largest publishing house in Germany specialising in art. Bruckmann became acquainted with the painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach in Munich, who introduced him to the photographer Joseph Albert in 1861. Bruckmann commissioned the artist to adapt ‘Goethe’s Female Figures’ into a separate series, which was then published as the ‘Goethe Gallery’ from 1861 onwards. … This ‘Goethe-Gallerie’ became very well known at the time, not least because of its enormous format. Albert succeeded in producing exquisite photographic reproductions measuring 48 x 68 cm. The work was extremely expensive; the 21 mounted photographs – referred to as ‘kartons’ (cardboard mounts), like the originals – were sold for 224, whilst individual sheets were sold for 14 talers. ‘With this first photographic production, which received enthusiastic reviews everywhere, Bruckmann quickly became known as a producer of art reproductions’ (F. Heidtmann). – Title page slightly stained with brown spots, otherwise very well preserved.
