Parr/Badger I, 138. Roth, The Book of 101 Books 90. Roth, The Open Book 122 f. – First edition of the first book published by B. Brandt. – „This was Bill Brandt’s first book. At the time he was a 32-year-old freelancer, social documentary photographer working for Weekly Illustrated and Picture Post in London, but he’d already been to Paris to work with Man Ray. Compared with the works Brandt later produce and the ones he would later inspire in Robert Frank and others, The English at Home seems tame, but it dit have a lasting effect“ (A. Roth). – „From start to finish, Brandt’s career as a photographer was the most convoluted and unusual in the entire history of 20th-century photography. During the 1930s, he worked as a documentary photographer exploring traditional British subjects, before emerging as Britain’s leading landscape and portrait photographer during and after the Second World War. He was eventually recognised as an artist and as Britain’s most significant modernist photographer” (Ian Jeffrey in Koetzle). – Joints and edges slightly rubbed, contemporary dedication on the title page, a good, clean copy.
