Seuss, Dommermuth und Maier. Beat in Liverpool. Ffm. 1966

Seuss, Dommermuth und Maier. Beat in Liverpool. Ffm. 1966

Seuss, Juergen, Dommermuth, Gerold und Hans Maier. Beat in Liverpool. Frankfurt am Main, Büchergilde Gutenberg (1966). 8°. 36 S., [2] Bl., 145 Duotone-Tafeln und 1 Single-Schallplatte A-Side: „The Clayton Squares“ at the Cavern Club mit den Titeln „Watch your Step“, „Hey, good-looking“ u. „Tell me how do you feel“; B-Side: „The Hideaways“ at the Sink Club mit den Stücken „Black night“ und „Mamma, keep your big mouth shut“. Orig.-Leinenband mit illustr. Schutzumschlag.

Erste Ausgabe. – Sehr gutes Exemplar.
First edition. – With an original photograph by J. Seuss: Portrait of Adrian Maurice Henri (silver gelatine, 28.5 x 22.5 cm, bearing the photographer’s stamp on the reverse); the photograph is reproduced in the book. – The British Beat poet A. M. Henri (1932–2000) published his first poems in 1967 alongside works by Brian Patten and Roger McGough in the exceptionally successful tenth volume of Penguin Modern Poets 10, entitled *The Mersey Sound*, and was thus, alongside McGough and Patten, one of the so-called ‘Liverpool Poets’. Alongside his writing, he was also active as a painter, his works embodying the same immediate Pop Art sensibility as his literary output. – “Yet another book about the Beatles? *Beat in Liverpool* is less than that, and yet more. When the Beatles – an average band amongst hundreds playing music in the port and industrial city on the west coast of England, a city of millions characterised by slums and unemployment, docks and shipyards, impoverished immigrants from Ireland, Wales and the West Indies, gangs and young violent criminals – were propelled into the limelight by a shrewd manager, the world discovered Liverpool. Television filmed the slums and proclaimed: ‘This is where it all began.’ Tourists took photographs of the entrance to the famous Cavern Club, on gloomy Mathew Street, tucked away between warehouses and fruit stores. But did they discover the real Liverpool? Three young people set out to find out what it’s really like: How do the 380 beat bands live, who today play the music known to the world as ‘Merseybeat’ in cellars, suburban pubs and youth clubs? What are the life goals, values and ideals of the tens of thousands of young people in Liverpool for whom the beat is more than just leisure entertainment, for whom it is a ‘way of life’ (blurb). – Very good copy.
