Während wir aus anderen Teilen Südamerikas bereits umfangreiche Sammlungen von Völkertypen besitzen, fehlten sie aus dem von mir bereisten Gebiet bisher völlig. Die indianische Bevölkerung dieser Gegenden, der Flußgebiete des oberen Rio Negro und Yapurá, ist verhältnismäßig stark und hat in ihren teilweise durch große Schwierigkeiten der Schifffahrt von europaischem Verkehr und Einfluß sehr abgeschlossenen Wohnsitzen, sich selbst überlassen, ihre Ursprünglichkeit und Rassereinheit besser bewahren können, als die Stämme anderer Gegenden des Kontinents, die einer starken weißen Besiedelung oder den vernichtenden Scharen der Kautschuksammler ausgesetzt waren“ (Aus der Einleitung). – T. Theodor Christian Koch, 1872-1924) „nahm von 1898-1900 jedoch an der zweiten Expedition des Leipzigers Hermann Meyer durch Zentralbrasilien teil, und arbeitete ab 1901 zunächst als Volontär, ab April 1902 dann als wissenschaftlicher Hilfsarbeiter am Berliner Museum für Völkerkunde. Zwischen 1903 und 1905 unternahm er eine umfangreiche Expedition in das nordwestliche Amazonasgebiet, deren wissenschaftlicher Ertrag in Form von Beschreibungen der dort lebenden Indianervölker, umfangreichen Sprachaufnahmen, Fotos sowie einer eindrucksvollen ethnographischen Sammlung seinen zukünftigen Ruhm begründen sollte“ (M. Whilst we already possess extensive collections of ethnic groups from other parts of South America, such collections from the region I travelled through have been completely absent until now. The indigenous population of these regions—the river basins of the upper Rio Negro and Yapurá—is relatively numerous and, in their settlements, which are largely cut off from European contact and influence due to the great difficulties of navigation, has been left to its own devices, they have been able to preserve their original character and racial purity better than the tribes of other parts of the continent, which were exposed to heavy white settlement or the devastating hordes of rubber collectors” (From the Introduction). – T. Auer 666 (spanische Ausgabe). Koetzle, Fotografen A-Z 342 f. – Erste Ausgabe der zweiten Veröffentlichung des berühmten Brasilianischen Fotografen. Im selben Jahr erschienen auch eine amerikanische Ausgabe in New York. Die erste Veröffentlichung „Fotografias“ erschien 1982 in Rio de Janeiro. – „En 1986, paraissait le premier livre Autres Amériques de Sebastião Salgado aux éditions Contrejour, un ensemble de photographies, fruit de nombreux voyages entre 1977 et 1984 qui revisitaient l’Amérique Latine en évoquant la persistance des cultures paysannes et indiennes. La force de conviction des photographies en noir et blanc, leur puissance plastique, la maquette de Lélia Salgado présentant la plupart des images en doubles pages participèrent au succès de ce livre qui reçut le Prix du Premier Livre Photo, fut édité en quatre langues puis épuisé en quelques mois. First edition of the second publication by the famous Brazilian photographer. An American edition was also published in New York in the same year. The first publication, ‘Fotografias’, appeared in Rio de Janeiro in 1982. – „In 1986, Sebastião Salgado’s first book, Autres Amériques, was published by Contrejour, a collection of photographs taken during numerous trips between 1977 and 1984, revisiting Latin America and evoking the persistence of peasant and Indian cultures. The persuasive power of the black-and-white photographs, their visual impact, and Lélia Salgado’s layout, with most of the images presented across double pages, contributed to the success of this book, which received the Prix du Premier Livre Photo, was published in four languages, and sold out in a few months. Sabin 14925. – Erste Ausgabe. – „Combier (a French merchant) undertook to write an account of the voyages he had undertaken in the course of his commercial activities in the New World. He settled mainly in Guaymas and Hermosillo, and sailed between Mexican ports such as Guaymas, Acapulco, Mazatlan and Veracruz. He also visited Valparaiso, Chile, and the area around La Paz-Loreto in Baja California. His observations on the people and terrain visited were carefully noted and included in the narrative“ (Hill p. 61). – Einband etwas berieben, Kapital mit kl.
