It seems by the preface that the work was written in 1551. This comparatively unknown work presents the subject of arithmetic from the classical standpoint. The author speaks of the dignity of arithmetic (‘De dignitate arithmeticae’), and follows this discussion by a series of definitions from Euclid, a brief treatment of the operations, the theory of proportion, the operations with fractions, and some of the Greek theory of numbers. One curious feature of the book is the notation of Greek fractions after the Arabic manner“ (D. E. Smith). – V. Strigel „schlug auf Anraten Melanchthons die akad. Laufbahn ein und folgte 1548 einem Ruf als Theologe an die (zunächst als Gymnasium academicum) neu gegründete Univ. Jena, deren erster Rektor er wurde und wo er seit 1558 als erster Dekan der neu eingerichteten phil. Fakultät amtierte“ (T. Pfundner in NDB). – Einband etwas angestaubt und am Fuß restauriert, Wappen-Exlibris des 20. Jahrhunderts, Innengelenke angeplatzt, Titelblatt und 4 Bl. (Vorwort) von Teil I des ersten Werks fehlen, beim Titelblatt des dritten Werks fehlt die untere Hälfte mit der Druckermarke und Verlagsangabe (liegt in Farbkopie bei), stellenweise fleckig, die letzten beiden Bl. mit kl. Randläsuren (kein Textverlust), trotz der Mängel, noch gut erhaltenes Sammelband mit drei sehr seltenen frühen mathematischen Lehrbüchern.

The second part bears the Greek title “Eukleidu ton pente kai deka stoicheion ek ton tu Theonos synusion to proton.” The title page and preface (4 leaves) of Part I are missing. – II. Not yet listed in VD 16. – The only edition of the extremely rare arithmetic textbook by Victorin Strigel (1524–1569), a student of Melanchthon. – V. Strigel „began his academic career and, in 1548, accepted a position as a theologian at the newly founded University of Jena (initially known as the Gymnasium academicum), where he became the first rector and, beginning in 1558, served as the first dean of the newly established Faculty of Philosophy” (T. Pfundner in NDB). – Binding slightly dusty and restored at the bottom; 20th-century coat-of-arms bookplate; inner joints cracked; title page and 5 leaves (preface) of Part I of the first work are missing; the lower half of the title page of the third work, containing the printer’s mark and publisher’s information, is missing (a color copy is included); stained in places; the last two leaves have minor marginal discoloration (no loss of text); despite these flaws, this is a well-preserved collection containing three very rare early mathematics textbooks.
