Catalogue of a collection 218 and 219. – First published in 1841 in a print run of 500 copies. – Written at the height of the Industrial Revolution in England, the book reflects the transition from an agrarian-mercantilist economy to a modern, bureaucratic economy based on the division of labour. Sir Arthur Helps (1813–1875), English writer, historian, and clerk of the Privy Council, provides an early form of behavioural economics, human resource management and organisational psychology. Helps tirelessly emphasises the importance of honesty, reliability and clarity in business dealings. In economics, we know that where trust prevails, monitoring and contractual costs (transaction costs) fall. Helps describes trust as a rational economic factor.
