| Yukichi – Barral i Altet, Xavier (Hrsg.). Watabe Yukichi – a criminal investigation. From the Wilson Center Center of Photography. (Text by Titus Boeder). Paris, Éditions Xavier Barral – Le Bal (2011). 4°. [98] S. mit 69 Duotone-Tafeln. Orig.-Leinenband mit Deckelschild und Deckelbild.
Parr/Badger III, 116. – First edition. – „On 14 January 1958, the disfigured and amputated body of a man was discovered near Lake Sembako in Japan. Two investigators from Tokyo came to help out the local police in order to resolve what at first appeared to be a banal case, but which proved to be more complex. For the first time, a photographer was authorised to accompany the police to document the investigation. Watabe followed the inspector as he questioned witnesses (workers in a tannery factory, local police officers etc.) and pounded the streets of the most insalubrious neighbourhoods in Tokyo – its bars, bridges, alleyways and hospitals – in search of the killer. Watabe’s images record much more than simply a police investigation, they reveal Tokyo in the 1950s in a way that has rarely been shown“ (Éditions Xavier Barral). – The book’s design and production fit the mood completely, with Japanese folded pages and printing achieving something close to tha told sooty gravure look. It is a perfect re-creation of a 1950s or 60s Japanes photobook, without being a simple pastiche. And as a perfect bonus, Watabe’s photographs are so good, far better than the standard reportage job one might have expected“ (Martin Parr). – Yukichi Watabe was a Japanese photographer born in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture in 1924. 1943, he joined Tokyo Kogakusha, a photography studio, and became a freelance photographer in 1950. 1992, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. 1993, he died. – Copy in like-new condition. Schlagwörter: Crime, Japan, Kriminalfall, Kriminalgeschichte |
