Vollard für den Pariser Kunsthändler Jean-François Lefranc (1890-1950). – Erste französische Ausgabe der berühmten Autobiographie des wohl bedeutendsten Pariser Kunsthändlers. Die amerikanische Erstausgabe erschien 1936 mit dem Titel „Recollections of a Picture Dealer“ bei Little, Brown and Company in Boston. Da Vollard 1939 bei einem Autounfall verstarb, stellt die bei Albin Michel vorliegende Fassung von 1937 die letzte zu seinen Lebzeiten erschienene und von ihm selbst autorisierte Version dar. Sie bildet bis heute die Textgrundlage für alle modernen Nachdrucke und Übersetzungen. Das Buch, eines der wichtigsten Dokumente über die Geburt der modernen Kunst in Paris um die Jahrhundertwende, gewährt tiefe Einblicke in den Pariser Kunstmarkt, die Mentalität von Sammlern sowie Vollards eigene Pionierarbeit als avantgardistischer Galerist und Verleger von Künstlerbüchern (Livres d’artiste). La première édition américaine est parue en 1936 sous le titre « Recollections of a Picture Dealer » chez Little, Brown and Company à Boston. Vollard étant décédé en 1939 dans un accident de voiture, la version de 1937 publiée chez Albin Michel constitue la dernière parue de son vivant et autorisée par lui-même. Elle constitue encore aujourd’hui la base textuelle de toutes les rééditions et traductions modernes. Cet ouvrage, l’un des documents les plus importants sur la naissance de l’art moderne à Paris au tournant du siècle, offre un aperçu approfondi du marché de l’art parisien, de la mentalité des collectionneurs ainsi que du travail de pionnier mené par Vollard en tant que galeriste d’avant-garde et éditeur de livres d’artistes (Livres d’artiste). The first American edition was published in 1936 under the title ‘Recollections of a Picture Dealer’ by Little, Brown and Company in Boston. As Vollard died in a car accident in 1939, this 1937 edition published by Albin Michel represents the last version to appear during his lifetime and authorised by him personally. To this day, it remains the textual basis for all modern reprints and translations. The book, one of the most important documents on the birth of modern art in Paris at the turn of the century, offers deep insights into the Parisian art market, the mindset of collectors, and Vollard’s own pioneering work as an avant-garde gallery owner and publisher of artists’ books (Livres d’artiste). Furthermore, in it Vollard describes, with humour and rich in anecdotes, his personal encounters and working relationships with artists such as Paul Cézanne, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse. – The book’s dedicatee, Jean-François Lefranc, gained notoriety in 1942 as a collaborator and profiteer from the Nazi looting of art in France during the Second World War. – The head and foot of the book have minor losses, with some brown staining in places; otherwise in good condition.
