Ginzkey. Bunt durcheinander. Mainz (1928)

Ginzkey. Bunt durcheinander. Mainz (1928)

Ginzkey, Franz Karl. Bunt durcheinander. Ein Bilderbuch von Adolf Uzarski. Mainz, Scholz (1928). 4°. 8 unbez.

(H. Fischer in Oldenburg, Künstler).
First and only edition, extremely rare. – “When discussing expressionist traits in picture books of the 1920s, the name Adolf Uzarski comes to mind alongside those of Aline Stickel, H. Hussmann and Felix Meseck… Merkelbach refers to the ‘expressionist influences in painting’ that are evident in *Bunt durcheinander* (Merkelbach 1973, p. 322). Indeed, influences from modern art movements are present in the book… The vase of flowers on the inside title page, which dispenses with a ‘correct’ perspective, can be seen from two viewpoints – both from the side and from above – a typical Cubist style in the tradition of Picasso or Braque. The zoo scene on page 2 verso is populated by figures who are slightly reminiscent of Grosz’s characters. However, Uzarski shows himself to be profoundly influenced by the artistic work of Max Beckmann, most clearly evident in the ‘Footballers’ (page 8 r)… this image is the most compelling illustration in the book… The illustration for ‘Big City’ (page 3v) bears strong expressionist traits – a theme that shaped the culture of the 1920s like no other… (H. Fischer in Oldenburg, Artists). – Cover dusty and slightly discoloured, head and foot with minor losses; otherwise very well preserved, with some finger stains along the margins throughout, but otherwise in good condition.
