McBurney Green, Mary. Is it hard? Is it easy? Illustrations by Len Gittleman. New York, Young Scott Books (1960). 4° (26 x 21,5 cm.). [32] p. with illustrations after photographs, printed in ochre and black. Illustrated hardcover with illustrated dustjacket. First edition. – „The book … is highly regarded for its innovative visual design, featuring experimental high-contrast photography by Len Gittleman. Gittleman utilized a distinct silhouetting technique that eliminated mid-tones to present striking graphic figures against white pages, helping young readers focus entirely on the actions and expressions related to the theme of the book“ (New York Times). – Leonard J. „Len“ Gittleman (1932-2022) studied at the renowned Institute of Design in Chicago (the ‘New Bauhaus’) and graduated there in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in photography. He studied under the legendary photographers Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. He worked as a freelance advertising photographer and filmmaker in Manhattan, including for the New York Times and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). From 1962 to 1975, he taught photography at the Carpenter Centre for the Visual Arts at Harvard University. As well as illustrating children’s books, he gained international recognition for his experimental short films (which were screened at the Cannes Film Festival, amongst other venues) and for his portfolio *Lunar Transformations* (1972) – a series of NASA moon photographs from the Apollo 15 mission that had been heavily altered graphically. – The rare dust jacket with minor edge wear; a very good copy.
