1 Rey, H(ans) A(ugusto). Feed the animals. London, Chatto and Windus not dated (ca. 1950). Quer-Kl.-8° (14 x 16 cm.). 11 fold-out colour plates. Colourfully illustrated cardboard cover with a metal spiral binding.

First British edition of the picture book, originally published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin in 1944 in the Lift-the-Flap Series. – Two children follow the Zookeeper as he walks around feeding the animals – seals, giraffe, zebras and more. – The German-American illustrator and children’s book author H. A. Rey (born Reyersbach, 1898–1977), creator of the famous children’s book *Curious George*, grew up in Hamburg near the famous Hagenbeck Zoo. This shaped his lifelong love of animals and drawing. Due to the economic crisis in Germany, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1924. There, he initially sold bathtubs whilst drawing posters on the side. In Brazil, he was reunited with Margret Waldstein, a Jewish photographer and artist who also hailed from Hamburg. The couple married in 1935 and moved to Paris in 1936. It was here that they produced their first book, *Raffy and the 9 Monkeys*, as well as the very first draft of *Curious George*. When the Nazis were on the outskirts of Paris in June 1940, the Reys, as Jewish citizens, fled at the very last moment. Hans assembled two bicycles from spare parts. With minimal luggage – including the manuscript of *Curious George* – they fled to the south of France, then on via Spain and Portugal back to Brazil and finally to New York. In New York, the Reys enjoyed immediate success. The publisher Houghton Mifflin published the first *Curious George* book in 1941. This was followed by numerous other classics, including this lift-the-flap book *Feed the Animals* (1944). – In very good condition.

1 Bonn, Franz. Theater-Bilderbuch. 4. verbesserte Auflage. Esslingen, J. F. Schreiber o. J. (um 1885). 4° (26 x 34 cm.). Vier aufklappbare Kulissenbilder in Chromolithographie mit zweispaltigem Text. Orig.-Halbleinenband mit farblithographiertem Deckelbild.

Slg. Breitschwerdt 30 (3. Auflage von 1893). Hoppensack 2 (Reprint). Klotz 592/44. Laub 278-280. LKJ IV, 92. Stuck-Villa II, 16. Wegehaupt IV, 248. – Seltenes aufwendig ausgestattetes zuerst 1878 erschienenes Theaterbilderbuch.
A rare, elaborately produced paper theatre first published in 1878; the charming pop-up scenes—each featuring five layers—depict „Little Red Riding Hood,“ „Hansel and Gretel,“ „The Wise Men from the East,“ and „Christmas Eve,“ with accompanying scripts at the bottom. – The „Hansel and Gretel“ scene by the anonymous artist originally appeared in 1869 in the Schreiber picture book *Die Geschichte von Hansel und Gretel, oder vom zuckerigen Haus* (cf. Wegehaupt IV, 683; 2nd ed., 1875). According to H. Krahé, the illustrations were redrawn and animated by L. Meggendorfer in 1887 for his pull-tab picture book of the same title (cf. Katzenheim 118). – „When the stage sets are opened, a scene composed of four sequential pictorial elements appears within a theatrical frame. In the foreground—resembling an orchestra pit—are children making music (or little angels, in the Christmas scene). Below are short texts in dialogue form, intended to be read aloud with assigned roles. The fairy tales feature slightly modified text: Little Red Riding Hood does not stray from the path, and the wolf is annoyed by the well-behaved child“ (W. Geisenheyner). – The back cover features publisher’s advertising for seven Meggendorfer children’s books. – Edges rubbed; covers heavily dust-soiled and stained; in the „Hansel and Gretel“ scene, one of the bear’s paws and Gretel’s left hand are missing; text shows some foxing; otherwise well preserved.
