Rey, Feed the animals

Rey, Feed the animals

Rey, H(ans) A(ugusto). Feed the animals. London, Chatto and Windus not dated (ca. 1950). Quer-Kl.-8° (14 x 16 cm.). 11 fold-out colour plates. Colourfully illustrated cardboard cover with a metal spiral binding.

First British edition of the picture book, originally published in Boston by Houghton Mifflin in 1944 in the Lift-the-Flap Series. – Two children follow the Zookeeper as he walks around feeding the animals – seals, giraffe, zebras and more. – The German-American illustrator and children’s book author H. A. Rey (born Reyersbach, 1898–1977), creator of the famous children’s book *Curious George*, grew up in Hamburg near the famous Hagenbeck Zoo. This shaped his lifelong love of animals and drawing. Due to the economic crisis in Germany, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1924. There, he initially sold bathtubs whilst drawing posters on the side. In Brazil, he was reunited with Margret Waldstein, a Jewish photographer and artist who also hailed from Hamburg. The couple married in 1935 and moved to Paris in 1936. It was here that they produced their first book, *Raffy and the 9 Monkeys*, as well as the very first draft of *Curious George*. When the Nazis were on the outskirts of Paris in June 1940, the Reys, as Jewish citizens, fled at the very last moment. Hans assembled two bicycles from spare parts. With minimal luggage – including the manuscript of *Curious George* – they fled to the south of France, then on via Spain and Portugal back to Brazil and finally to New York. In New York, the Reys enjoyed immediate success. The publisher Houghton Mifflin published the first *Curious George* book in 1941. This was followed by numerous other classics, including this lift-the-flap book *Feed the Animals* (1944). – In very good condition.
